Шар Publishing
Turning a publisher's catalogue into a direct sales channel — backlist discovery by author, genre and series, and a checkout that keeps the trade discount in-house.
Шар is a book publisher with a deep backlist and no direct sales channel of its own — every copy sold went through a retailer's margin. We designed and built the catalogue-first storefront: discovery by author, genre and series, with a bespoke cart and checkout that keeps the trade discount in-house.

The direct channel is where the margin is
Шар is an independent Bulgarian publisher, and the economics of independent publishing are unforgiving in a specific way: through the trade, a large share of cover price disappears into distributor and retail discount before the publisher sees anything. The same copy sold direct returns close to the full cover price less fulfilment. For a small press, that gap is frequently the difference between a title earning out its print run and not.
A functioning direct channel is a P&L decision, not a marketing one.
the economics of a small press
Getting that channel to work means respecting how books are actually found. Readers do not search a product catalogue; they move from a title to its author to the rest of the series. That path is where backlist sells, and backlist is the long tail that funds a small publisher between frontlist releases. A shop that models books as generic products severs it. It also has to settle the way the market pays — card and Apple Pay alongside cash on delivery and bank transfer, since a COD-only checkout leaves card buyers unserved and a card-only one is unshippable here.
Against a catalogue this size, a heavyweight e-commerce platform was the wrong trade: a generic product model and permanent overhead, carried to serve order volumes that never needed it. The design already existed as a polished prototype. The real job was turning it into a shop the publisher's own editorial staff could run — people who work in titles and authors, not SKUs and attributes.
Prototype to production, end to end
Our mission was to give a literary catalogue a storefront without turning it into a generic store — taking the prototype through to production with exactly as much commerce as a publisher needs and no more. The catalogue leads rather than the shopping cart: book, author, genre and series are first-class, so editorial staff maintain the shop in the vocabulary they already work in, and every browsing path a reader takes ends somewhere buyable.

Merchandise the frontlist, monetise the backlist
The homepage does a publisher's two jobs at once: a hero and a "book of the month" merchandise the frontlist, while a marquee of titles keeps the wider catalogue in circulation instead of buried behind search.
Books, authors, genres and series each hold their own page, which is what makes the backlist reachable — a reader arriving for one title lands on the author, and from there on the rest of the series. That is the highest-intent path in book retail and the cheapest incremental sale a publisher can make, since the traffic is already on the page.
Checkout stays deliberately short. Cards and Apple Pay sit alongside the offline methods this market expects, so no buyer is turned away at the payment step, and a newsletter capture converts the readers not ready to buy today into an owned channel for the next release — the only acquisition asset a publisher does not have to rent.
A sales channel the publisher owns outright
Editorial staff add titles, authors and series and take real orders themselves — no developer in the loop for a new release, and none of the permanent overhead a catalogue this size would otherwise have carried. Every order placed here is a copy sold at publisher margin rather than trade margin.
